Born: 1856, Highland Falls, New York, U.S.A. Died: 1916, Washington, D.C., U.S.A.

 

career:

Surgeon; major in the Medical corps U.S. Army, 1883-1909; prominent zoologist. He was a member of the Roosevelt South African Expedition.

Author of many zoological publications.

The genus Mearnsia Merr. and some plant species were named in his honour (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).

 

Collecting localities:

Philippines. Sulu Archipelago: Dammi I. (Jan. 4, 1906), Tawitawi I., Tataan I. (Jan. 8, 1906).-Luzon: around Baguio; Mindanao, Zamboanga: with W.I. Hutchinson on Mt Malindang (May 1906). -Mindoro: with Hutchinson and Merrill, starting from Calapan (Oct. 31, 1906); Mt Halcon (Nov. 22 on the summit); back at Calapan (Dec. 7).1-On the islands of Batan and Fuga (June 1907).2
