Volkens, Georg Ludwig August

Born: 1855, Berlin, Germany. Died: 1917, Berlin, Germany.

 

career:

Botanist, educated in the universities of Berlin and Würzburg; from 1889-1910 Lecturer at Berlin, since 1895 titled Professor, and besides in 1898 appointed Custodian of the Botanical Museum at Berlin.

In 1884 he explored the Egyptian-Arabian desert, from 1892-94 he visited East Africa, from 1899-1900 the Carolines,1 Marianas, and the Palau Islands. As he did not receive a telegram which was to inform him to pay a visit to Java before returning home, he travelled from the Palau Islands straight back to Germany. The Java visit took place in 1901-02.2

Author of some papers on periodic leaf-change in the tropics,3 etc.

He is commemorated in Vitex volkensii Guerke.

 

Collecting localities:

1899-1900. In July 1899 setting out on a voyage to the Carolines; he sailed via Singapore, Makassar (SW. Celebes), Ambon, Banda Islands, Friedrich Wilhelmshafen (former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland, NE. New Guinea) and Herbertshöhe (Gazelle Peninsula, New Britain). When touching at the above-mentioned harbours probably no collections were made. After visiting the Carolines (Oct. 7, 1899-June 25, 1900), the Marianas and the Palau Islands, he was back at Berlin early in October.-Java (Dec. 1901-July 1902), collecting on G. Gede(h)-Pangrango, G. Papandajan (1901), and in the Buitenzorg Botanic Garden (Febr. 1902).

Herb. Berl. [B]: c. 300 Java nos, including economic plants; 550 nos and wood samples in the Show Mus. Berl. He sent many living plants and seeds to Germany. In Herb. Kew only Africa material from him is recorded.

His plants are occasionally mentioned in S.H. Koorders: ‘Exkursionsfiora von Java’ (Jena 1911-12).
