Born: 1925, Dordrecht, Z.H., Holland.

 

career:

Studied for a year at the Academy for Plastic Arts at Rotterdam, but subsequently turned to botany and still later to medicine at Leiden University (in 1947/48 in his 3rd year). M.D., Ph.D. medicine. In 1946 he made a voyage to the D.E.I. for assisting displaced persons. Later on the staff of the Anatomical-Embryological Laboratory of Leiden University, joined the Dutch New Guinea Expedition to the Sterrengebergte as a Physical Anthropologist in 1959. Since 1963 Professor and Director of Anatomy and Embryology, University of Groningen.

 

Collecting localities:

The voyage covered May 26-Aug. 13, 1946. Collections were made in W. Java: Tg Priok (June 20-23), Batavia (22), Tjililitan (July 5), Batavia (5), Tg Priok (5-6); P. Weh (N of Sumatra): Sabang (20).

1959. Dutch Centr. New Guinea: Sibil Valley, Hollandia-Sentani (N. coast), Tsjop and Ok Bon Valley.

1946: About 150 plants, for the greater part in private Herbarium; some in Herb. Leiden [L]. 1959: Some plants (incl. mosses) with the collection of B.O. van Zanten, and C. Kalkman (see there), in Herb. Leiden [L].
