career:

Graduated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge (1967 B.A., 1st class in Botany); Sept. 1967-Sept. 1968 research on the Malayan palms Eugeissona and Johannesteijsmannia in Malaysia, stationed at the Univ. of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur; research on the above palm genera in the Botany School at Cambridge, under the supervision of E.J.H. Corner, Oct. 1968-Sept. 1970; Ph.D. Univ. Cambridge Dec. 1970. In October seconded by the British Government to the Indonesian Government under the Technical Cooperation Programme of the Colombo Plan, to work in the Lembaga Biologi Nasional, Bogor, Indonesia, at least up till Sept. 1972.

He is doing taxonomic research into rotans and other palms, and most of his publications deal with palms.2
