Fleming, John

(Source: Flora Malesiana ser. 1, 5: Cyclopaedia of collectors, Supplement I)

Born: 1747. Died: 1829.

Of the Indian Medical Service, Bengal, 1768-1813. He was in charge of the Calcutta Botanic Garden during one of the periods of leave of W. Roxburgh, of whom he was a very good friend. He is cited as the donor of plants from the Moluccas (1798), and from Manila (1811, Musa textilis), to the Calcutta Botanic Garden (cf. Roxburgh, Hort. Beng. 1814). As nothing is known of travels outside India, it seems probable that he was intermediary only. Ch. Campbell e.g. sent the caoutchouc vine to Roxburgh by means of Mr Fleming (see Marsden, A Hist. of Sumatra, 1811, p. 92).
