career:

Accompanied the expedition of the British surveying ship ‘Alert’ (1878-82), under command of Capt. Sir G. Nares (itiner. etc. cf. sub R.W. Coppinger) and subsequently was appointed successor of the former.

He was commemorated in Dicliptera maclearii Hemsl.

 

Collecting localities:

In H.M.S. ‘Flying Fish’: Christmas Island (Dec. 1886-Jan. 1887).1 The ship operated in Banka Strait (N of the Minahassa in N. Celebes) in Aug. 1885 and June 1886 (cf. sub S.J. Hickson).

Herb. Kew [K]: 23 nos from Christmas Island; nearly all botanical specimens collected were destroyed by insufficient drying.
