Born: 1898, Indian Ocean, 8° 26 N. 72° E. Died: 1971, Périgord, France.

 

career:

Was educated at the Agricultural College at Wageningen, Holland; since 1921 Forest Officer in D.E. Indian Government service, successively stationed in Java, S. Sumatra (Palembang and Tandjong Karang) from 1922, and since April 1928 in Celebes (first at Manado, since 1935 at Makassar). In August 1938 he was transferred to the Riouw Archipelago (Tandjong Pinang); at present inspector of the Forest Service, Batavia. From 1946-48 Inspector of the Forest Service, Batavia; 1948-55 Director Akademi Kehutanan (Forestry School), Bogor; from 1952 onwards respectively Lecturer, Extraordinary Professor, and Professor at the Gadjah Mada University, Jogja. In 1958 living in the Hague.

Author of several papers, including some on the vegetation types of Celebes.1

Podocarpus steupii Wassch. was named after him.

1921. Java (lichens).-1927. Centr. Sumatra: Djambi.-He also collected lichens in Sumatra.-1929-34.2 N. Celebes: Boladng Mongondow Subdivision; P. Lembeh (Tondano) (Aug. 16, 1932); environs of Manado; Boalemo subdivision (Minahassa);3 G. Klabat; Gorontalo; Centr. Celebes: Paloe Valley (1929);4 subdivisions of Poso and Kolonedale.-1936-37.5 SW. Celebes: Lompobatang (1937); Centr. Celebes: Rongkong region, near Limboeng, and Porio (Masamba) (1937).-1938-42. Riouw Archipelago.

Herb. Bog. [BO], dupl. partly numbered in the F.R.I. (cf. sub Forest Research Institute, Buitenzorg) series. Many Celebes plants, the nos 151-181 from G. Klabat, the nos 204-228 from Rongkong region. In Herb. For. Res. Inst. Buitenzorg [BZF]: 14 nos from Djambi (Centr. Sumatra, 1927), and Celebes plants; Herb. Pasoer. [PAS now in BO]: 20 nos of ferns from N. Celebes (pres. 1931). Java lichens were presented to du Rietz (see there).
