Veth, Daniel David

Born: 1850, Amsterdam, Holland. Died: 1885, Kalahangka, W. coast of S. Africa.

 

career:

Engineer, son of Prof. P.J. Veth, educated at polytechnical schools in Germany. He was from 1873-76 in the employ of the Swiss Railways, working near Zürich and on the St Gotthard line. He joined the Central Sumatra Expedition 1877/78 (cf. sub A.L. van Hasselt).1 Together with van Hasselt he collected some plants on G. Kerintji (Sumatra West Coast) in Dec. 1877. In 1884 he went to Africa as leader of the Cunene Expedition to the Portuguese colonies Angola and Benguela, where his health broke down .2

He is commemorated in Frullania vethii Lac.
