Born: 1833, Karlsruhe, Silesia, Germany. Died: 1905, Berlin.

 

career:

Geologist and geographer of a Prussian expedition (see below), of which E. von Martens, O. Schott-Müller and M.E. Wichura were members too. He was educated in the universities of Breslau and Berlin, took his Ph. Dr’s degree in 1856 at Berlin. He extended his travels for 12 years; after his return in 1872 appointed professor, successively at Berlin, Bonn, Leipsic, and Berlin again.

Collecting localities:

‘Preussische Expedition nach Ost-Asien’, 1860-62; cf. sub M.E. Wichura, also for literature. von Richthofen sailed in the ‘Arkona’ since Singapore (Aug. 13, 1860); from March 1861 in the ‘Thetis’ again. He made a trip with Junghuhn and de Vrij in Oct. 1861, returning to Buitenzorg on the 25th, leaving the next day for Batavia, joining the expedition early in Nov. at Singapore. When the Prussian squadron had set out on the homeward voyage, R. embarked at Hongkong for San Francisco.

Apparently he collected some Algae;1 he might have collected some phanerogams too.
