Born: c. 1870, Limburg Prov., Holland. Died: after 1933, Fort de Kock, Sumatra.



Came to the D.E.I. as a private soldier; later appointed day-labourer in the employ of the Forest Service,1 and finally Market Clerk at Fort de Kock.

Author of a paper on Raflesia.2

J.J. Smith named some orchids in his honour (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).


Collecting localities:

1915. N. Sumatra, Atjeh: Singkel.-1916. P. Morsala (= Moesala or Mansalar)-1916-17. W. Sumatra. Tapanoeli Res.: Tapanoeli, Taroetoeng, Sawah Baroe (Natal), Sipirok; Sum. West Coast Res.: Kaladi (Sidjoengdjoeng), Fort de Kock, E. part of Padang Lawas (May-June 1916), Gadang Beo (Solok), Soengei Dareh.-1923. Sumatra West Coast: Fort v. d. Capellen.



He collected many living orchids on behalf of W. Groeneveldt and E.R. Jacobson (see those); several of these orchids were presented to Hort. Bog. They are partly represented in Herb. Bog. [BO], and described by J.J. Smith.
