Born: 1888, Veendam, Gr., Holland. Died: 1966, Bennekom, Gld., Netherlands

 

career:

Forest Officer, educated and taking his Dr’s degree (1922) at Wageningen Agricultural College; in the D.E.I. from 1913-22 on the staff of the For. Research Institute (Buitenzorg), except in the years 1914-15 when he was stationed in the teak districts. In 1922 appointed Botanist at the Buitenzorg Herbarium, 1924-31 Chief of the same institution; in 1931 Director of the General Experiment Station for Agriculture (Buitenzorg) and since 1934, besides, Head of the Service of Agriculture and Fishery. He retired in 1938 and settled near Wageningen; in 1947 appoint­ed Lecturer at the Agricultural College there. Retired in 1953.

Nervilia beuméei J.J.Sm. was named after him.

During many years in the environs of Buitenzorg, e.g. at Depok and Koeripan;3 for Depok he employed a special Indonesian collector.

[BO]: from 1913-22 in a series numbering 1-3332, 3401-4649, 4701-5643 (till Nov. 1922), 5641-5674 (Nov. 1922, from Depok; evidently using the nos 5641-3 twice), 6603­6684 (Nov. 1914) etc.; dupl. in Herb. Leiden [L] (coll. 1917-30). In Nov. 1917 the series numbered up to 1273, after that other foresters etc. numbered in the series too, e.g. Th. Altona, Dr L.G. den Berger, W.A.P. de Boer, C. Boot, D. Burger, O.H. Gobée, B.J. Grutterink, F. Kramer, E. van der Laan, J.A.J.H. Stoutjesdijk, A. Thorenaar, P. Timmer, L.P. Weeda, R. Wind [or R. Wind Hzn] and H.E. Wolff von Wülfing (see those) and many others. Evidently he started a new numbering at Buitenzorg; also A-nos, e.g. from Madoera, Bangil and the coast E of the old harbour-canal (? near Batavia, 1935); in 1928 he collected 150 nos from Java and 66 from Sumatra; in 1929, 10 nos from Priok, W. Java.
